No one has objections with first look at Japanese “Phoenix Wright” movie

Law & Order ain’t got nothing on Phoenix Wright, especially since he is about to have a live-action movie made about his digital self!

The Sōkai Jōhō Variety Sukkiri television series’ “All Entertainment Quiz” segment aired footage from the upcoming live-action “Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney” film this week. Directed by Takashi Miike and based on the hit Capcom game, the movie stars Hiroki Narimiya as Phoenix Wright, as well as Takumi Saitō as prosecutor Miles Edgeworth and Mirei Kiritani as Maya Fey.

The film is set in a parallel universe version of Japan, where a large increase in harsh crimes has led to a new court system. Under this new system, the defense attorney and public prosecutor have three days to battle cases out in open court to determine guilt or innocence of the accused, placing priority on speed instead of thorough investigation. The film will open in Japan on February 11, and most likely never in America except through bootlegs and the internet.

Frank Miller admits he knows nothing about Islam, despite creating “Holy Terror”

Frank Miller is a polarizing character in the world of comics. With the release of his latest graphic novel, “Holy Terror”, Miller has raised more eyebrows than before with this controversial piece.

Originally slated to be a Batman book (titled “Holy Terror, Batman”), DC Comics quickly dropped the book when its scandalous nature was revealed. Miller did not have to look far to get a new publisher, and the book has come out with much intrigue surrounding it, with many critics unhappy about Miller’s perspective on Muslims and the religion of Islam. In an interview with Newsarama, Miller had this to say about the creation of his book and a bit more on his political views:

“I’m not hearing from a lot of people that are telling me they are not afraid of trouble from abroad and homegrown trouble. The issue here is a message of killing. It’s not a religion. I, for instance, was born Catholic, and I can tell you very little about the mysteries of Catholicism but I can tell you a fair amount about the Spanish Inquisition. By the same token, I can tell you squat about Islam, I don’t know anything about it, but I know a Goddamn lot about Al Qaeda and I want them all to burn to hell.”

Many critics have noted that while Miller maintains his position that this book is not necessarily against Islam but against terrorism, the two topics seemed to meld together in his work with no difference between the two. At the end of the day, “Holy Terror” is a very personal and cathartic work by Miller that may not have been ready for the politically-correct public eye.

Miller also said that it was his choice to pull away the cowl of Batman for this book, since it became more about the conflict against Al Qaeda and became “unrestrained”, something the Bat is not suited for. Due to that, he rewrote the entire script, however certain pages of the actual comic seem lazily cropped to pull elements of the Batman costume out of certain scenes.

Marvel Comics gives you free Digital Download codes for FREE

Marvel Comics is giving out free digital comiXology download codes (did I mention they are free yet?), that will be polybagged with the first, second and third issues of their new “Avenging Spider-Man” series. This series, written by Zeb Wells and illustrated by the legendary Joe Madureira, follows Spider-Man as he works with the Avengers, with the first issue debuting on November 9. Marvel had announced plans to include a digital code in the first issue, but sold enough copies to merit expanding the promotion through the next two issues as well.

Marvel sent out a press release with the info:

“At New York Comic Con we heard from fans and retailers that this was the most exciting digital comics move of the year because of the added value it gives every copy of Avenging Spider-Man,” said David Gabriel, Marvel SVP of Sales. “Based on initial orders of over 100,000 units for the first issue-and the steady increase in orders since we’ve begun promotion on this plan-we knew that including a code for a free digital copy in future issues of Avenging Spider-Man not only excites our retailers, but incentivizes fans to come into stores for one of the year’s hottest new releases. It’s a win-win for everyone with no extra cost to readers and an increased revenue share for retailers.”

Marvel currently releases their comics online staggered from their physical release day, but this new campaign hopes to entice readers to turn to the dark side and start downloading comics. Granted, you will need to spend $3.99 first to get the paper-version of the issue that has the code, but the offer of free always comes with a cost. Will this clever marketing plan work, or just alienate fans and buyers further against it?

“DC Universe” MMORPG will be free to play starting November 1

During a live video chat on the DC Universe Facebook page, Sony announced that on November 1, their popular “DC Universe” MMORPG on both PC and the PlayStation 3 will be free to play.

With this free play, new players will have two customizable character slots plus the entire current game’s content at their finger tips to use. Users who have already spent at least $5 the game (basically all current players) will get a “premium” membership, which is a step up from “freemium” and allows for more than two characters, more inventory storage and enhanced social options like trading and sending messages in the game. “Legendary” status will be granted to those who choose to pay $14.99 per month and grant even more access to characters and inventory, all DLC and social options cranked to 11, so-to-speak. Lifetime members are automatically legendary.

However, not everything is completely free. Players will still have the option to pay a monthly fee for “Premium” and “Legendary” tiers of membership. Future expansion packs, additional character slots, and inventory space will also cost extra. For people who have not played the game, this is a good way to lure them in, and it is very tempting. Anyone here plan on giving this free version a try?

Peter Cullen gives his thoughts on Transformer 4 & who should direct it

In an interview with Super Hero Hype, the original (and thankfully current) voice of Optimus Prime, Peter Cullen, said he was happy with the way the integrity of Optimus Prime has remained:

“I’m glad that he’s maintained his character, although in number three we see another side of Optimus Prime that is unique in its own: His ability to be vulnerable and to show weakness and character. They’re very strong human qualities. No matter how good a person can be, at some point or another in their life they’re gonna fall. We see that side of Optimus when he loses his temper. There’s vengeance and anger, but I think that’s a trait we all have in one way or another. I hope in four, and I hope we do four and five for that matter, that we explore the human nature side of a villain. Forgiveness, compassion, and understanding, which is very essential in maintaining the strength of any character.”

Cullen sounds like he is on board for the sequels, and rightfully so since it must be a royally massive payday for the actor. The biggest question was who should direct them, and Cullen is very content with keeping Bay on board:

That’s a really great question. Michael Bay certainly is known as a commander in chief to be able to control so many aspects of a huge production, it’s like being a general. There’s a creative element, there’s the action element. It would certainly require a director capable of putting those huge pieces together. It’s quite a challenge. I don’t want to suggest anyone in particular, I think to find a director would be just as important as finding an actor playing a certain role that you know will guarantee the character will be successfully portrayed because the entire movie requires that combination.

One thing we can all agree on, at least it’s not Uwe Boll.

First look at “Behind the Skull” feature from “Captain America: The First Avenger” DVD

Coming out on Tuesday, October 25, “Captain America” The First Avenger” will hit stores nationwide on DVD and Blu-ray 3D. As with all good DVD’s, both sets will feature plenty of deleted scenes and making-of features, and here is a sneak peek of one of them.

Courtesy of Super Hero Hype, here is your first look at the “Behind the Skull” feature, which goes into the history of the evil Red Skull character, as well as how they transitioned this iconic villain from the printed page to the silver screen as played by Hugo Weaving. It was interesting seeing how they balance the make-up to show the character, while also maintaining the actor and allowing him range of motion in his face in spite of the many prosthetics he was wearing.

The three-disc set includes the film on Blu-ray in high-definition 3D and in high definition 2D, as well as on standard definition DVD with a digital copy. The two-disc Blu-ray/DVD combo pack includes a high definition presentation of the film, plus a standard definition presentation with a digital copy. Both sets boast over an hour of behind-the-scenes bonus material including an original Marvel short film, a sneak peek of the upcoming “Avengers” film, six featurettes that go behind-the-scenes of the filmmaking process, deleted scenes and much more. There will also be a single-disc set for you cheap bums.
