Ben Affleck no longer DCU Batman, new movie scheduled for 2021

“I am Batman!” Not so much anymore, Mr. Affleck! It looks like there will be a new face under that cowl come 2021.

Deadline broke the news today that Ben Affleck was officially stepping down from his role as Batman in future DCU movies, and also explained that a new flick is already planned for the near future.

The plan is for the next DCU movies to feature a younger Batman, so potentially a Year One adaptation (although whose version that will be is to be determined).

The Hollywood Reporter already picked up a quote from new director Matt Reeves:

“It’s very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale. It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime, it’s going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation.”

Regarding villains, Reeves had this to say:

“There will be a Rogues Gallery. The casting process will begin shortly. We’re starting to put together our battle plan. I’m doing another pass on the script and we’ll begin some long-lead stuff to start developing conceptual things.”

As for Affleck, Deadline says he won’t be sitting around doing nothing for long:

As Deadline exclusively broke he is starring in and producing the feature adaptation of Kate Alice Marshall‘s novel I Am Still Alive, which Universal won in a competitive bidding scenario. The two-time Oscar winner is also starring in the Warner Bros.’ Gavin O’Connor drama Torrance. Affleck worked hard on The Batman story, but knew he wasn’t the right one for this particular version.

The new movie is slated for a June 25, 2021 release, and the hunt for who will play the caped crusader is already under way. As for the DCU as we know it, consider sticking a fork in it since it is done. This movie, as well as the upcoming Shazam and Joker solo films will all be more character driven and unique to themselves, as opposed to tying them together to form a larger narrative or cinematic universe.
