Usagi Yojimbo Moves To IDW Comics For New Monthly Series

Our favorite samurai rabbit has found a new home, as Stan Sakai’s “Usagi Yojimbo” series is jumping from Dark Horse Comics to IDW Publishing.

The New York Times broke the news earlier today, and wrote that IDW will take the helm for the next full-color series from Stan Sakai. The new comics begin this June, with a monthly ongoing series, and will also be releasing full-color collected editions of the entire Usagi Yojimbo saga, which spans from 1984 until today.

Sakai spoke to the times for a telephone interview on Wednesday, and explained to their reporter that the series is “mainly fantasy and action and adventure, but there’s a lot of teaching there, too,” as it is set in an anthropomorphic version of 17th-century Japan. “I draw from that history and culture and folklore to make my stories.”

Indeed, one of my favorite elements of the comic is how much fact is intertwined with the fiction. My entry point was the “Daisho” storyline, which is centered around the historic and cultural significance of the pair of swords a Samurai wields. I was hooked immediately from then on for all future books.

Sakai hopes to continue the adventures of Usagi for many more years (and we here at NN2D hope he does for decades). “I have no other job skills,” he said with a laugh. “If not for Usagi, I’m unemployed.”

The new series will be colored by Tom Luth, and will begin with a three-part story involving bunraku (Japanese puppetry).

Dark Horse has been the home of Usagi since 1995, which was still a black-and-white comic back then. Their partnership ended with the most recent tale, “The Hidden”, which explored Christianity’s emergence in 17th century Japan.

Usagi Yojimbo has been a busy bunny ronin in the past few years. He has appeared numerous times in other places, including a crossover with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the Ghostbusters. A little over a year ago, Gaumont optioned Usagi Yojimbo for an animated movie, although we have not heard much about that since the initial news. Most recently, he was part of the upcoming TMNT board game as a playable character.

We wish Stan Sakai much success on this next chapter of Usagi Yojimbo, and we will be certainly following him there for the ride!

Nerd News Today Will Be Live At Big Apple Comic Con 2019

We just wrapped up our biggest event of the year and most popular one here at Nerd News Today, NY Toy Fair, but we are already looking ahead to what’s next in the convention scene.

Coming up in March, the Big Apple Comic Con returns to NYC for another stellar year, and I can announce to you that Nerd News Today will not only be attending, but we will be going live throughout the event!

We did our first ever live streams during Toy Fair, and it was a lot of fun interacting with fans and viewers around the globe. We learned a lot about streaming, and decided we want to give it another go at Mike Carbo’s well-known comic event.

The Big Apple Comic Con started in 1996 in – believe it or not – a church basement, as a last minute savior to another con that was abruptly cancelled. From there, it grew and thrived, and has become quite the destination for comic lovers in New York City.

We will be live streaming on Youtube to give you a taste of what this convention is like, and perhaps our Facebook and Instagram pages this time as well for a bit. Who knows what we will see and who we will run into! And best of all, now that you know we are coming, you can be on the lookout to say hi to us!

Of course, the real reason you would be coming to BACC is not just to see us. You really want to come to meet some of the celebs in attendance, including William Shatner – who will be making his only NYC appearance at this event.

Mike Colter, star of Netflix’s “Luke Cage” will also be in the house, joined by Brent Spiner, Kathleen Turner, David Gerrold, John O’ Hurley, and more.

Comic creator guests attending BACC 2019 include Frank Cho, Jim Steranko, Jae Lee, Mark Texeira, Ramona Fradon, Sean Chen, and many other notable writers and artists.

You can check out the full guest list at this link here.

There will also be a full gamut of exhibitors, including CGC Comics and CBCS Comics to grade books, along with other independent creators, vendors and comic stores from all over the East Coast.

Big Apple Comic Con takes place March 9-10 in midtown Manhattan at the The Penn Plaza Pavilion inside the Pennsylvania Hotel. Tickets are available at this link here.

Conan The Barbarian Joins The Avengers? Marvel Announces New Team with Unusual Line-up

Last year when Marvel scooped up the Conan The Barbarian license, people just assumed it would mean reprints of the old books and maybe a new solo title. No one was expecting the bloodthirsty Sumerian to join the Avengers!

Entertainment Weekly got the exclusive bit of news, and revealed that Conan would join Wolverine, Venom, Punisher, Elektra, and Brother Voodoo to form the “Savage Avengers”. The series will be written by Gerry Duggan and drawn by Mike Deodato Jr., with a first issue cover by David Finch. You can check out that cover below:

“This is an unsanctioned team of heroes,” Gerry Duggan said, who will be writing both Savage Avengers and Savage Sword of Conan. “It has to be something that visually makes sense to you, and I think it does. [Artist] Mike Deodato Jr. is illustrating this book in both worlds.”

“We envisioned a threat, a magical green zone where the evil wizards of Conan’s world are trading spells with the Hand in Japan. Conan is on a very Conan-like mission; he’s heard a tale of an amulet so he’s chasing it, and the evil magic sorcerers are doing something that would be a Marvel Avengers problem. It feels like we have found some very fertile ground that is a Venn diagram between those two worlds.”

“The Marvel heroes have not quite seen the likes of Conan before, but when you turn it around and look at Conan viewing this, he’s very skeptical of a lot of it because he’s so magic-averse,” Duggan continued.

“His interpretation of the Venom symbiote, when he first sees it, is that it must be an evil genie. There’s real fun to be had there. At one point Conan believes that Logan hails from somewhere called Pabst, and that’s a well-earned miscommunication. That’s where a lot of fun comes from. Conan is a fish out of water, but everyone will come to respect the skills they’re all bringing to the fight.”

“Savage Avengers” will be on sale soon, although no exact date was given. A 10-page preview will be available in the Free Comic Book Day Avengers #1 on May 4.

TMNT and Batman Team Up For New Animated Movie Crossover

Cowabunga! Looks like The Caped Crusader and four heroes in half-shells will be joining forces for a brand new animated movie coming out this Spring.

Syfy broke the news earlier today, and gave us this description of the plot for this epic meet-up between Batman and The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles:

Based on the Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics miniseries by James Tynion IV and Freddie Williams II, the film will see the turtles meeting Batman via a transdimensional encounter, and feature our heroes teaming up to face Batman’s deadly rogues gallery.

This is the first time these worlds have collided in animation, but the two have met before in that aforementioned crossover comic between IDW and DC Comics from 2015.

The film’s voice cast features Troy Baker (The Last of UsBatman: Arkham Origins) as both Batman and The Joker (making him the first actor to ever take on both roles in one project), Darren Criss (the Emmy winning star of The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story) as Raphael, Kyle Mooney (Saturday Night Live) as Michelangelo, Baron Vaughn (Grace and Frankie) as Donatello, Eric Bauza (The Woody Woodpecker Show) as Leonardo, Rachel Bloom (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) as Batgirl, Tom Kenny (Spongebob Squarepants) as The Penguin, John DiMaggio (Adventure Time) as Mr. Freeze, Tara Strong (The Powerpuff Girls) as both Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy, Carlos Alazraqui (Reno 911!) as Bane, and Cas Anvar (The Expanse) as Ra’s al Ghul.

Knowing the cast does give us a bit more info about plot details, especially since we have five villains for the heroic group to deal with. How they all tie together remains to be seen.

Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will arrive on 4K, Blu-ray, and Digital late this spring.

Michael Avon Oeming Leaves His Mark on IDW Comics with “Dick Tracy Forever”

IDW Publishing is proud to announce the perfect pairing of acclaimed writer/artist Michael Avon Oeming and pop culture’s enduring icon of law and order in Dick Tracy Forever, a four-issue miniseries debuting in April.

In the Forever series, Dick Tracy is the proverbial Sisyphus, pushing the law boulder up the hill as he struggles for reason and order in a world with none. His attempts at delivering justice are met with crime and chaos in the form of unpredictable and absurd villains. But Dick Tracy will never give up trying, no matter the era or incarnation… even when his startling new case defies all notions of time and space!

Oeming says, “I’ve gotten to write and draw most of my bucket list characters, from The Spirit to Batman and more, but I never dreamed that Dick Tracy would even be a possibility. It feels completely natural and I cannot wait to show why he’s such a relevant character for all times.”

“Michael Avon Oeming’s award-winning work in crime comics makes him the perfect creator to tackle one of the greatest crime-busters of all time,” says Denton Tipton, Group Editor at IDW. “I promise you’ll never see Dick Tracy the same after reading this series… and I mean that in a good way, wisenheimer!”

Oeming will be joined on the Dick Tracy Forever series by colorist Taki Soma. For the debut issue, Oeming will provide the main cover and a noir-inspired spot color variant, with renowned illustrator Kyle Baker (Marvel Action: Black Panther) contributing a special incentive cover variant, as well.

“Mike Oeming is one of the greatest comic creators working today,” says Brian Michael Bendis, writer of Superman, Powers, and Young Justice. “Oeming on Dick Tracy? I’ll take ten!”

Hasbro announces anthology for Women’s History Month, “Synergy”

In recognition of Women’s History Month, IDW Publishing and Hasbro Inc. (NASDAQ: HAS) have teamed up to create Synergy: A Hasbro Creators Showcase, a 48-page celebration anthology of fan-favorite creators and new talent working with many of the most beloved Hasbro characters.

The Synergy anthology features five brand-new stories: autobiographical works written by Mairghread Scott (drawn by Sara Pitre-Durocher, reuniting the creative team behind the Transformers: Till All Are One series) and Katie Cook (of the hit My Little Pony comic), plus original tales inspired by G.I. Joe, Transformers, and Jem and the Holograms.

Mairghread Scott says, “Transformers is a brand that shaped both my childhood and adult life. I’m grateful for the chance to talk about what these amazing robots have meant to me, and others, over the years.”

Katie Cook says, “Hasbro was such an integral part of my upbringing. My Little Pony inspired a youth full of pastel imaginings and became a huge part of my cartooning career as I got the chance to make those imaginings real. I bonded with childhood friends over ponies in the 1980s, and as an adult, I crafted stories for My Little Pony alongside creators who have become the friends of a lifetime.”

In addition to storytelling, Synergy: A Hasbro Creators Showcase includes four new pin-ups, as well as a gallery of thirteen fabulous images from the IDW archives – dynamic illustrations that celebrate the women who have already made, or will soon make, an impact on the world of Hasbro for many years to come.

Synergy editor Megan Brown says, “This is a great coming together of creative talent and an amazing showcase for a host of wonderful authors, artists, and colorists — both old and new. I am beyond thrilled to be editing this compilation, and to be given the chance to highlight the amazing work of women in the comics industry.”

IDW Relaunches Transformers Comics

IDW Publishing proudly announces that a brand-new Transformers series will debut in March 2019 that will explore the very moment when a glorious, peaceful Cybertron begins its downward spiral into chaos.

Available twice monthly, IDW’s Transformers comic will be written by Brian Ruckley, author of the Godless World fantasy trilogy, and illustrated by Angel Hernandez (Star Trek: Discovery – Succession) and Ron Joseph (Micronauts: Wrath of Karza).

In this new Transformers comic, IDW will explore Cybertron in ways never seen by audiences before – delving into an idyllic society, peaceful for thousands of years, as it faces the most momentous event in its history: the mysterious end of a single life. Through the eyes of young Bumblebee and his friends, fans will witness conspiracies forming, harmony giving way to conflict, and the very fabric of Cybertronian civilization tearing itself apart.

“Bringing Transformers fans this story is a real privilege,” says Brian Ruckley. “But just as important, it’s an amazing opportunity for new readers to discover and explore one of the biggest universes – and one of the best casts of characters – that science fiction has to offer, and to get in right at the start of a truly epic saga.”

Ron Joseph says, “In my youth, I devoured everything Transformers – toys, comics, the cartoon, the movie – with a Unicron-like hunger. ‘Robots in Disguise’ dominated my every waking moment. To join IDW’s creative team for the launch of a Transformers comic is staggering, and easily one of the greatest moments of my life.”

“We are eager to begin this new chapter in Transformers storytelling,” says Michael Kelly, Hasbro’s Vice President of Global Publishing. “We are excited to begin a tale that will be accessible and appealing to readers unfamiliar with Transformers lore, while still providing the depth and drama that our long-time fans expect. It’s a big responsibility, but we’ve got the right team and the right characters to do it.”

The debut issue of this new Transformers comic will be available with multiple cover variants, by artists Gabriel Rodriguez, Angel Hernandez, Casey W. Coller, and Freddie E. Williams II. Issue #2, also available in March, will feature covers by Nelson Daniel, Ron Joseph, and Jeffrey Veregge.

Netflix Original Series “GLOW” Dazzles as Upcoming IDW Comic Book

IDW Publishing enters the world of hairspray and headlocks with the announcement of a four-issue comic book miniseries based on GLOW, the acclaimed Netflix Original comedy series.

Debuting in March, the GLOW comic is written by Tini Howard (Euthanauts, WWE, Rick & Morty) and drawn by Hannah Templer (Jem and the Holograms: Dimensions). Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, the co-creators of the show, will officially serve as executive producers of the original comics, overseeing their creative development.

“We’re thrilled to work with IDW to bring new stories to life on the page and in the ring. Can we smoosh 14 women into a little frame? Only time will tell… but we couldn’t be more excited!” say Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch.

Starring Alison Brie, Betty Gilpin, and Marc Maron, GLOW shines the spotlight on a crew of misfits in mid-1980s Los Angeles who reinvent themselves as the Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling. IDW’s GLOW miniseries provides a glimpse into the action between-the-scenes, as the less-than-prepared ladies are conned into a fundraising match… against real lady wrestlers!

“I’m more than just a GLOW fan, I’m a wrestling fan, too. I’ve written wrestling comics before, and I adore it,” says Tini Howard. “Wrestling and comic books are a natural fit for more than just tights and fights. Each of the gorgeous ladies has either developed her own character or adapted to one thrust upon her, and making that identity her own is not dissimilar to, say, putting on a bat costume.”

Hannah Templer says, “I’m absolutely thrilled about the visual opportunities a GLOW comic offers – there is a wealth of inspiration to be drawn from ’80s animation, fashion, and even wrestling magazines. I also think GLOW, which takes real-world conflicts and settles them within the fantasy of the wrestling ring, provides a really fun arena for expressiveness and visual play!”
