Everything We Know About The Broadway “Cats” Film Adaptation So Far

When Tom Hooper announced he was going to make a film adaptation of the Broadway musical “Cats”, no one was quite sure how. It’s not as if Andrew Lloyd Webber’s show had not been recorded before, but this time things will be different. This time, they have an all-star cast and Hollywood money behind it, so this will either be a triumph for theatre fans, or a universally panned flop. Let’s discuss what we know about the movie so far, and what we learned from CinemaCon 2019.

We already know the cast is huge and features some big names. Idris Elba has been cast (oddly enough his second time playing a feline – the first in 2016’s “Jungle Book”), alongside Jennifer Hudson who will sing “Memory”. The movie also has Sir Ian McKellen, James Corden, Taylor Swift, Rebel Wilson, and Dame Judi Dench cast so far in roles.

This is Hooper’s second musical movie, the first being “Les Miserables” back in 2012. The big question is what has he learned since then. According to io9, during Universal Picture’s panel at CinemaCon, attendees were priviledged enough to get a first look at things via a new sizzle reel:

In the reel, which was largely shot on set, Hooper revealed he wanted to bring the musical to life in a very 2019 way. To do that he’s using performance capture to make his actors look like they have real fur on them.

And so what the audience saw at the presentation were clips of actors in those fancy suits, complete with dots and everything. Some had cameras attached to their heads, others did not. It’ll eventually look something like Avatar’s Na’vi, but with fur, and the actors said they studied cat movements for the film.

Also, much of those soon-to-be digitally enhanced performances were shot on sets that are three to four times their usual size, to give the actors “a cat’s eye view.” In other words, they’re going to be the size of cats as they sing. Huge chairs and tables with the actors running and dancing under them.

No images of the cats have leaked yet, but it sounds like a very unique vision for this movie.

It was also noted that Andrew Lloyd Webber’s music will be used in the movie, and “all disciplines of dance will be represented”. Much of the cast who is not a big name A-lister is filled out by professional ballet dancers and other theatre regulars.

“Cats” is expected to meow into theaters on December 20, 2019.

Skater Hits The Ice At Championship With “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure” Routine

Yesterday, we wrote about a Ghostbusters routine happening at the World Figure Skating Championship in Saitama, Japan. Turns out the geekiness was not limited to just Italy, as Japan’s Keiji Tanaka broke out his Stand and skated a dynamic routine based on anime hit “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure”.

Check out the video below:

Tanaka dressed as Jōsuke Higashikata and performed to “Diamond Is Unbreakable” by M.Fukuda for this exhibition routine.

Tanaka is the 2016 NHK Trophy bronze medalist, 2017 Winter Universiade silver medalist, 2011 World Junior silver medalist, and a two-time Japanese national silver medalist

He ranked #14 in the Men’s competition during the WFSC 2019, with a score of 238.40.

Anime has been a big hit with many pro figure skaters, and is not just limited to the WFSC. In 2016, an ice skating routine based around Cowboy Bebop occured, and just last year there was a Sailor Moon routine.

World Figure Skating Championships 2019 Ain’t Afraid Of No Ghosts, as Ghostbuster Performance Steals Show

Matteo Rizzo put on the jumpsuit and proton pack during the World Figure Skating Championships in Saitama, Japan this weekend, and wowed the crowd with his Ghostbusters routine.

Rizzo, who was representing Italy, is a highly decorate figure skater who seems to have a little bit of a geeky side to him. His exhibition number during the WFSC was Ray Parker Jr.’s “Ghostbusters” song, and is worth the watch.

Check out the performance below:

Matteo placed 7th overall at the event with a score of 257.66. His short program was done to Volare by Luca Longobardi, while his Free Skating performance was done to a Queen medley and a Rolling Stones medley.

As far as we are concerned, his score should be larger than a 35-foot long Twinkie that weighs approximately 600 lbs.

New Castmembers Join Broadway’s “Harry Potter And The Cursed Child”

I hope you’ve been “keeping the secret” if you saw “Harry Potter and The Cursed Child” on Broadway. If you are one of the lucky few who have seen it, consider removing that jealousy spell cast on me, because I still haven’t. However, it’s time for some new magic to be weaved on the stage, as several actors are coming in to take over some of the roles in this play.

Nicholas Podany and Bubba Weiler (as Albus Potter and Scorpius Malfoy, respectively) have joined the cast, along withJames Snyder as Harry Potter, Jenny Jules as Hermione Granger, Diane Davis as Ginny Potter, Matt Mueller as Ron Weasley, Nadia Brown as Rose Granger-Weasley, and Jonno Roberts as Draco Malfoy.

“Harry Potter and The Cursed Child” is a two-part play currently running on Broadway that has garnered much attention for its special effects. Based on the book by Jack Thorne, J. K. Rowling and John Tiffany, the show started in 2016 and continues to draw sell-out crowds.

If you call yourself a Potter head, make a pilgrimage to NYC and go see this on Broadway before it disappears away to another dimension. Accio tickets!

WWE and Topps To Make “Garbage Pail Kids” Wrestlers

If you like being grossed out, then you probably owned a few Garbage Pail Kids trading cards at some point. Time has treated these grotesque Cabbage Patch kids well, as they continue to thrive with new cards, toys, and other merch. Today, they take part in a surprising new official collaboration with the biggest sports entertainment company in the world.

WWE is teaming with Topps to make WWE Garbage Pail Kids, which will include current superstars as well as Legends. The product line will run the gamut of clothes, cards, and perhaps more.

A new line of WWE/ GPK T-shirts and hats will be available on WWEShop.com and Spencer’s.

WWE Shop will offer T-shirts for Becky Lynch, Ronda Rousey, John Cena, Seth Rollins and The Miz as “GPKs.”

WWE x GPK tees with “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, Randy Savage, Ric Flair, The Undertaker, The Ultimate Warrior and Andre the Giant will be available at Spencer’s starting March 21.

Collectible trading card packs will also be available for ordering on Topps.com, starting March 12.

Here is the official checklist of who will be in the pack of 13 cards:

1. Gigantic ANDRE
2. Breakin’ BECKY
3. C-Thru CENA
4. Savage RANDY
5. Mixed-Up MICK
6. Mouthy MIZ & Maryse
7. Slick RICK
8. Rowdy RONDA
9. Brawlin’ ROLLINS
10. Seething STEVE
11. Chipped ROCK
12. Unravelled WARRIOR
13. Undead TAKER

I am definitely curious to see how the other wrestlers will look after they get the GPK treatment, and am digging the preview they have shown us. They also seem fairly up to date since they include Ronda and Becky Lynch with her “Man” gimmick. Heck, they even have Miz and Maryse’s baby in a card!

Will you be picking these up when they are released tomorrow?
