GAUMONT OPTIONS STAN SAKAI’S ICONIC COMIC BOOK SERIES “USAGI YOJIMBO”

Gaumont has optioned the iconic, multi-generational comic book series Usagi Yojimbo from the series creator, writer, and illustrator Stan Sakai, to be developed into an animated TV series. First published in 1984, the multiple award-winning Usagi Yojimbo is to be co-produced by Gaumont, Sakai, James Wan’s Atomic Monster, and Dark Horse Entertainment’s Mike Richardson and Keith Goldberg who will serve as executive producers, with Chris Tongue as co-executive producer. The announcement was made today by Gaumont’s President of Animation, Nicolas Atlan.

“Usagi Yojimbo has been much sought after for many years, and we are honored to work with Stan Sakai to translate his multi-generational stories into the first ever TV series,” commented Atlan. “Usagi Yojimbo’s blend of history and mythology, clever balance between action and comedy, and real-world touchpoints combined with the supernatural, together with the passionate fan base that Stan has already amassed, makes this an incredibly exciting property to develop with our partners Atomic Monster and Dark Horse Entertainment.”

“We get fan mail from readers of all ages across the globe who have been asking to see Usagi Yojimbo in his own TV series,” added Sakai. “With Gaumont, James Wan and his team at Atomic Monster, and Dark Horse Entertainment, we have the best creative talent on board to bring the adventures I have been creating for over 30 years to life.”

“I’ve been an admirer of Stan’s comic series for a long time and it’s an honor to have the opportunity to bring this character and the rich world that Stan’s created to life for a new generation,” said James Wan.

“I’ve long admired Stan Sakai and his storytelling abilities,” said Mike Richardson, Dark Horse Entertainment President. “Stan built an amazing world that Dark Horse has enjoyed exploring in comic book form. We’re thrilled to be part of further exploration in a new, exciting medium.”

Sakai’s Usagi Yojimbo takes place amidst a rich fantasy setting in 17th century Japan and features a diverse world of anthropomorphic characters. Miyamoto Usagi, otherwise known as Usagi Yojimbo, is a ronin warrior with the heart of a hero. A skilled swordsrabbit, and one-time bodyguard for a Japanese War Lord, he’s now masterless, and explores his world of immense castles and humble villages, encountering dinosaurs, Yokai (ghosts/monsters), cats, bats, bounty hunters, giant snakes, and even aliens, facing exciting adventures at every turn, always ready to help.

Usagi Yojimbo is no stranger to the TV screen having appeared in all three Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series. Usagi debuted in TMNT in 1987 and he most recently appeared in Nickelodeon’s three-episode arc in the summer of 2017.

Usagi Yojimbo has amassed numerous awards and recognition over the past three decades. In the kid’s arena, the comics books have received a Parents’ Choice Award, an American Library Association Award, and the YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association) award. Other accolades and awards include Usagi Yojimbo being named among the Top 50 comic book characters of all time by Empire Magazine, the top 100 comic book characters of all time by IGN, and the top 50 best non-superhero graphic novels by Rolling Stone magazine. Mr. Sakai is a five-time Eisner Award-winner and multiple Haxter (Spain) Award-winner, and he earned the “Best Cartoonist” Harvey Award in 2016. The Usagi Yojimbo comics have been translated into 15 languages and are available in 21 countries in English.

Explore the StarCraft Universe in new mini-series from Dark Horse Comics

Dark Horse and Blizzard Entertainment are excited to announce a new four-issue comic series: StarCraft: Scavengers. This comic series is the latest addition to Dark Horse and Blizzard Entertainment’s line of critically acclaimed publications, preceded by The Art of Overwatch, Overwatch Anthology: Volume 1, and World of Warcraft Chronicle (volumes I and II).

Writer Jody Houser (Mother Panic, Faith) and artist Gabriel Guzmán (Star Wars) join forces for StarCraft: Scavengers, a new comic series further exploring the expansive universe of Blizzard’s acclaimed science-fiction real-time strategy game series. In StarCraft: Scavengers, a group of terrans hopes to pull off the job of their lifetimes: pillaging a derelict protoss ship in a decaying orbit above an uninhabited planet. Nerdy Loves Stories For All – “The Secret Loves of Geeks” Review

If you are a reader of this site, chances are you classify yourself as a nerd, geek, or something similar. You like comics, video games, movie franchises, cartoons, anime – any combination of those or others. That also means many of you know the sting of Cupid’s arrow, or when it misses you altogether. Fret not, because there is a new anthology for you to give you hope, a few chuckles, and some serious thought about what it means to be a geek and be in love.

The follow-up to The Secret Loves of Geek Girls, this edition expands on its premise and goes beyond gender to give everyone a chance to tell their story of romance. This book filled with comics and prose features many prominent nerdy creators (over 50 if you can believe they squeezed that many stories into this), who tell you all about their love life (and sometimes lack of one). When we say there is something for everyone, we mean it – as this book has tales from across the spectrum of sexuality and genders, and is very LGBTQ+ friendly.

Edited once again by Hope Nicholson, “The Secret Loves of Geeks” includes stories by Margaret Atwood, Mariko Tamaki, Trina Robbins, Marguerite Bennett, Noelle Stevenson, Marjorie Liu, Gabby Rivera, Gerard Way, Amy Chu, Tini Howard, and an enormous list of others.

Being the comic lover I am, I was initially drawn to just the illustrated stories. However, after reading a few stories from creators I knew or whose work I liked, I found myself digging through everything. I really enjoyed Gabby Rivera’s story of coming to terms with understanding her sexuality, and Hope Nicholson’s entry about hooking up with fellow comic creators at Comic Cons (and the problems with that). This anthology also opened my eyes up to many artists I was previously unfamiliar with, but now consider myself an intrigued fan. “Smudged” by Letty Wilson, “Deceptively Normal” by Dana Simpson, and “Love in Alderaan Places” by JP Larocque come to mind in particular.

The inclusiveness of all genders and sexualities in this book is not a gimmick, but a sincere effort to give everyone a voice. It’s a reminder to geeks from all worlds to remember that though we may be into different genres of fandom and different types of people, we all face the same battle when it comes to romance. It can be heartbreaking, it can be funny, but it’s always optimistic and hopeful. It’s a unifying element for all geeks to want to be loved and accepted by not just their own people but a significant other, and this anthology is a great way to connect yourself into the universal nerd collective.

The Secret Loves of Geeks is available February 14 from Dark Horse Comics. If you liked “The Secret Loves of Geek Girls,” you will love this second entry into the series that is bigger and better than the previous anthology. Are there plans for more of these in the works? Time will tell, but I have high hopes that this is not the last we have seen of this series.
