No DeadShot in “Suicide Squad ” Sequel, Idris Elba To Play New Character

According to a report from Variety, Elba will not reprise the role that Will Smith previously portrayed as Deadshot as previously reported. Instead, Elba will be a new character for the franchise, although who that will be remains to be determined.

” … But after taking the last few weeks to discuss, everyone involved felt this was the right move. The team also did not want to feel as if it was disrespecting Smith, who helped bring this character to life for the first time, by replacing him with Elba. While many believe chances are still slim for a future return, the decision keeps the door open for Smith to possibly come back in future films, since his original reason for leaving had to do with scheduling and not creative differences.”

Warner Bros. representatives had no further comments about this news at the time of posting.

With this piece of news, only three characters expected to return in the sequel – Harley Quinn as Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang, and Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller. Gunn is in the process of casting the remaining team members with production expected to start in the fall.

No other casting news has been announced yet, but with plans to start filming this summer, I am sure we will hear some info sooner than later.

The film is planned for a summer release in 2021.

Everything We Know About The Broadway “Cats” Film Adaptation So Far

When Tom Hooper announced he was going to make a film adaptation of the Broadway musical “Cats”, no one was quite sure how. It’s not as if Andrew Lloyd Webber’s show had not been recorded before, but this time things will be different. This time, they have an all-star cast and Hollywood money behind it, so this will either be a triumph for theatre fans, or a universally panned flop. Let’s discuss what we know about the movie so far, and what we learned from CinemaCon 2019.

We already know the cast is huge and features some big names. Idris Elba has been cast (oddly enough his second time playing a feline – the first in 2016’s “Jungle Book”), alongside Jennifer Hudson who will sing “Memory”. The movie also has Sir Ian McKellen, James Corden, Taylor Swift, Rebel Wilson, and Dame Judi Dench cast so far in roles.

This is Hooper’s second musical movie, the first being “Les Miserables” back in 2012. The big question is what has he learned since then. According to io9, during Universal Picture’s panel at CinemaCon, attendees were priviledged enough to get a first look at things via a new sizzle reel:

In the reel, which was largely shot on set, Hooper revealed he wanted to bring the musical to life in a very 2019 way. To do that he’s using performance capture to make his actors look like they have real fur on them.

And so what the audience saw at the presentation were clips of actors in those fancy suits, complete with dots and everything. Some had cameras attached to their heads, others did not. It’ll eventually look something like Avatar’s Na’vi, but with fur, and the actors said they studied cat movements for the film.

Also, much of those soon-to-be digitally enhanced performances were shot on sets that are three to four times their usual size, to give the actors “a cat’s eye view.” In other words, they’re going to be the size of cats as they sing. Huge chairs and tables with the actors running and dancing under them.

No images of the cats have leaked yet, but it sounds like a very unique vision for this movie.

It was also noted that Andrew Lloyd Webber’s music will be used in the movie, and “all disciplines of dance will be represented”. Much of the cast who is not a big name A-lister is filled out by professional ballet dancers and other theatre regulars.

“Cats” is expected to meow into theaters on December 20, 2019.

Four New Teammates Added To “Suicide Squad 2” Movie

The Suicide Squad sequel is picking up some steam, and word just got out of who may be part of the mercenary group in the upcoming James Gunn movie.

According to a report from Collider, four new members will join the gang in “Suicide Squad 2”. They are all familiar foes, though some may be more obscure than others. Ratcatcher, King Shark, Polka-Dot Man, and Peacemaker will all be added to the roster.

Peacemaker, who seems to be a cross between The New Gods and The Punisher, is rumored to be played by Dave Bautista, or at least that is who James Gunn wants to take the role. It would be a huge get for the movie, and I am sure Bautista would be open to working with Gunn again.

King Shark, meanwhile, is currently part of the DC TV universe and has appeared on CW’s “The Flash”, but the cinematic world is completely separate from the television universe so that is not a big deal.

Ratcatcher was a villain from Batman who was originally a male, and is now rumored to be genderswapped into a female role.

And as for Polka-Dot Man, he is a man who uses polka dots as weapons. Could be worse….

The remaining team members from the first movie to reappear (so far) are Deadshot who will now be played by Idris Elba, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. Joel Kinnaman is also rumored to reprise his role as Rick Flagg, but no official word on that just yet.

Idris Elba Takes Over “Deadshot” role in “Suicide Squad 2”

“Suicide Squad 2” is still a thing that is happening, despite some recent turbulence. Today, a new actor has joined the cast to take over a lead role that just lost its actor.

Last week, we learned that Will Smith backed out of “Suicide Squad 2”, leaving the role of Deadshot without a body to play it. Today, we have learned that Idris Elba will take over that character for the upcoming sequel.

“Sources say that Elba met with Gunn on Friday and it went so swimmingly that talks began with the studio in earnest. Elba was the first and only choice for Gunn and the studio.”

Although Deadshot is returning, Gunn is reportedly looking to add DC Comics characters that have not been in any movies yet, as opposed to returning ones for his rendition of the Squad.

Idris Elba is currently working on the Fast and Furious sequel, as well as the movie version of the “Cats” musical, where he plays Macavity.

“Suicide Squad 2” is being written and directed by James Gunn, with Charles Roven and Peter Safran producing. Filming is anticipated to start this September, with an estimated Aug. 6, 2021 release date.

“Star Trek Beyond” Trailer Released

Paramount Pictures has finally released the official trailer for the third film in their Trek reboot series, “Star Trek Beyond.”

A leaked version of the trailer was unofficially released not that long ago, but forget about that – this is the real thing!

Check out the new trailer below:

Not only has the original cast returned, but if the trailer is any indication, this film will have even more explosions, one-liners, and motorcycles than ever seen before in a Trek film. Yes, motorcycles. Not sure how I feel about that just yet, but I will wait to see the movie before I make too many more judgments about that.

“Star Trek Beyond” is set to hit theaters on July 22 in the US, and will star Idris Elba, Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Anton Yelchin and Karl Urban.
