Jonathan Frakes To Direct New “Picard Trek” Show

Commander Riker and Captain Picard may be reuniting soon, at least behind the scenes anyway!

Jonathan Frakes, AKA Cmdr. Riker from “Star Trek: The Next Generation”, has been a busy man in the sci-fi world, having recently directed episodes of “Star Trek Discovery”, “The Orville”, and “The Gifted”. It looks like he will be returning to the Trek franchise for the upcoming Picard series with Patrick Stewart to direct him in at least one episode.

Frakes spoke on The Writer’s Experience podcast, where he confirmed working on the upcoming Picard series, and also described a little of the aesthetic of the show:

Now my season looks like Star Trek: Discovery – the new wonderful Star Trekseries, the Picard show – which Patrick [Stewart] is launching, and The Orville, which is some people’s new Star Trek. And I just finished The Gifted, which is a sort of X-Men Marvel origins show. So, I am back in that world.

… My favorite part of the job is directing the acting, and enjoying the actor, and being sure I capture the moments that the actors created for us, especially with actors at the level of some of the stars of these shows. Sonequa [Martin-Green], and Patrick [Stewart]…and Anthony Rapp and Doug Jones.

When you give them a note they take the note and you can watch them fine tune it. It’s like a musician, like a fine violin player. They don’t over-dramatize the note. They just tune the instrument ever so slightly in an elegant, creative, stylish way. That’s the real treat of a day’s work.

None of this means that Frakes can’t don the red jumpsuit once more and appear in the show, and we certainly hope he will join Picard on-screen. It will certainly be a memorable reunion for Trekkers and Trekkies alike.

No other cast-members have mentioned an official return, although Whoopi Goldberg has said she would be down for it.

No release date for the new Picard show has been revealed yet, but look out for it in 2020, along with a barrage of other Trek shows.
