SDCC 2018: Marvel and IDW to Create New Comic Books For the Next Generation of Readers

Marvel Entertainment and IDW Publishing announced today that the two companies will develop middle-grade comic books designed for younger readers. Featuring some of Marvel’s most popular characters, the monthly issues and trade paperback collections, published by IDW, will be available for sale at local comic book shops and book retailers across the country, expanding opportunities for the next generation of Super Heroes to experience the Marvel Universe.

“From Iron Man to Captain Marvel, from the Hulk to Shuri — the Marvel pantheon has something for everyone,” says John Barber, editor-in-chief of IDW. “With this team-up, Marvel and IDW aim to bring exciting, all-new comics to a generation growing up in a Marvel world.”

Launching in November 2018, the Marvel and IDW collaboration will kick off with a Spider-Man series featuring both Peter Parker and Miles Morales, followed by an Avengers series beginning in December and a Black Panther series in January 2019. Each of these titles will serve as an easily-accessible jumping-on point for younger readers to follow the adventures of their favorite characters.

“Marvel is excited to work with IDW to share these brand-new stories with our younger fans,” said C.B. Cebulski, editor-in-chief of Marvel. “Characters like Spider-Man, Black Panther, and the Avengers inspire us through their strength and determination, but they resonate with readers because of the struggles they face and the challenges they overcome. We want to share their journeys with our younger fans first-hand.”

“Marvel is committed to delivering unique and accessible content for our younger audiences and fans,” said Sven Larsen, director, licensed publishing of Marvel. “As one of our most valued partners, IDW is the right fit to help us feature some of our most popular characters and publish stories created especially for the next generation of Super Heroes.”

“This partnership reflects the true spirit of collaboration at work,” said Greg Goldstein, president and publisher of IDW. “As comic book publishers, IDW and Marvel are able to produce high-quality visual storytelling experiences for fans both young and old. By combining our efforts, along with Marvel’s ever-increasing presence in popular culture, the results will be spectacular.”

Story details and creative teams for the new line of middle-grade comic books will be announced at a later date.

Since the debut of promotional materials from Marvel Studios’ highly anticipated blockbuster, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, fans were instantly thrilled and captivated by the return of Groot, who has now grown a bit since we last saw him at the end of the first movie! Attendees of the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 world premiere all expressed their huge love for Groot after seeing the movie.

Today Hot Toys is extremely excited to introduce the Groot life-size collectible figure which is destined to be one of the most adorable Hot Toys life-size figures you’ll ever see!

The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Groot life-size collectible figure stands approximately 26cm tall, featuring 3 interchangeable faces, newly developed body and expert paint applications to reflect Baby Groot’s unique appearance, a Ravagers outfit that be worn on the figure, and 2 pairs of interchangeable hands including a pair of extended attacking hands with embedded wires allowing a variety of poses!

‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2’ first wave of figures revealed

‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2’ is sneaking up on us fast, and the new action figures are also just around the corner.

The Nerdist has the scoop on this one, with images of the line-up as well as the build-a-figure that you can have once you purchase all of the figures in the wave. Check out the images in the gallery below:

The line includes Star-Lord, Drax, and Yondu from the new movie, as well as other Marvel characters like Darkhawk, Major Victory AKA Vance Astro, Nova (who had a previous version of this character in the last GotG line), and Angela. The BAF in this line is Titus, who I will admit I know very little about but now want to know everything about.

This first wave will arrive in the Spring, with the remaining figures to be in additional waves closer to the release of the film. This should include Gamora, Rocket Raccoon (who will likely have a Baby Groot with him), and hopefully the newly revealed Mantis.

NY Toy Fair 2016: Mezco Toyz booth tour – One:12 Collective, Marvel, DC, Mortal Kombat – VIDEO

Mezco Toyz may have just set a new standard in excellence when it comes to six-inch action figures, and when you see this video with their new One:12 Collective line, you might say the same.

We already covered Mezco extensively at their pre-Toy Fair press event, so if you want to see much more details about all of their figures, especially the One:12 Collective, you should check out our post here, which also features all of these toys out in the open and not behind glass.

At NY Toy Fair, the company debuted their first big 1/12 scale vehicle (excluding the Lawmaster motorcycle), the Batmobile from “Batman VS Superman: Dawn of Justice”. This was teased before the event, but seeing it in person is something else. We also see their six-inch figures from Marvel, DC, Star Trek, and a few other licenses.

We also learn more about what is next for this growing line of figures, and I expect very big things from Mezco as the year goes on.

Our second video with them takes a look at some of their other figures, including items from Mortal Kombat, Gigantor, Beetlejuice, Batman Returns, Hellraiser, Child’s Play, and their Living Dead dolls.

NY Toy Fair 2016: NECA booth tour – Aliens, Predator, DC, Marvel, Terminator, and more – VIDEO

NECA had so much stuff at NY Toy Fair 2016 that I spent over 45 minutes just filming all of their stuff, and had to break it up into four different videos to highlight everything the best way possible. Let’s dive in and get this biggie started!

Our first video is purely about their next figures from their awesome “Aliens” and “Predator” series. Both lines are going strong this year, and their dioramas in the booth continue to be some of the best in the entire event. The seventh Alien series will happen this year along with the 15th Predator wave, which continues to take inspiration from the old Kenner line. “Alien 3” will also get some love this year, so take a look at some of my favorite figures that keep getting better.

In this video, we take a look at the new 1/4 scale 18-inch figures from the Marvel and DC licenses, including versions of Iron Man and the Incredible Hulk from “Avengers: Age of Ultron”, Batman and Superman from the upcoming “Batman VS Superman” film, Harley Quinn from the “Arkham Knight” video game, and a new version of Christian Bale’s Batman in this scale.

NECA has been doing a great job with their 1/6 scale figures as well, as we see in this video that shows some of their other offerings in this size. The Terminator line continues with a new version of Arnold from the first film, the revival of the Rocky figures (which will get new packages and a few new things this year), more figures from Pacific Rim (which may be coming to a close with no sequel in sights), and a surprise figure – Donatello from the 1990’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” movie! This figure might be one of the best things that was in their booth and went viral during the event, so see it from all angles here.

Finally, more TV & film franchises with figures from Quentin Tarantino’s “Hateful Eight” film, Starz “Ash VS Evil Dead” series, and a few others. The big hit here was the figures from “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventures”, which will come with a paper diorama version of their phone booth. Another showstopper was their “Weird Al” Yankovic figure, which comes with two head sculpts and his accordion.

This video also shows off their new life-sized figures of Slimer, Batman, Arkham Knight, Freddy Fazbear, and a mini-version of the Staypuft Marshmallow Man, which buyers can add to their storefront or put in their home to scare away robbers. I hope they do a giant version of Robocop next!

“X-Men: Danger Room Protocols” fan-series shut down by Disney/ Marvel Comics

A few weeks ago, we reported on a fan-made animated series by Joel Furtado called “X-Men: Danger Room Protocols”. This self-funded Youtube show, a pixel-perfect homage to the 1990’s animated series, would have been free to the public. Unfortunately, those plans have been stopped dead in their tracks due to Disney/ Marvel.

In a video posted on his Youtube page, Joel explained the unfortunate circumstances behind the cancellation, as well as his opinion on why their decision makes little sense.

Joel discusses how he invested much of his time and personal funds to create this show, but due to a lawsuit from Disney/ Marvel Comics, he has been forced to pull down all videos about the project and will be unable to upload any future ones from it. In his rebuttal, Joel states that the show was not meant to be a threat to Marvel and was meant to be non-for-profit, and is extremely confused how Marvel views this as a problem as opposed to the erotic and hentai art of their brand that can be easily found sold in plenty of well-known online art galleries.

The video received plenty of responses from Youtubers, some in support of Joel while others seeming to revel in his bad situation, informing him that he “should have known better”, which he admittedly did by confirming the video series was intended to never make a profit and therefore should never have been an issue.

The most important comment came from Larry Houston, who directed 62 episodes of “X-Men: The Animated Series”, as well as working on other nearly every awesome animated show from the ’80’s and ’90’s among a portfolio of modern animation and live-action work. He wrote:

As the Director of the 90s X-Men:TAS TV series, I want to applaud your efforts, Joel, and I respect the passion you put into your work. Unfortunately, the Marvel I worked with and the Marvel/Disney (M/D) you’ve just experienced are not the same company and they are very litigious. A really smart PR department would’ve found a way to work with you so that their interests are protected and the free publicity you’d generate would be a win-win. But M/D really wants the rights to the X-Men back and your high quality of work and publicity is not what they want to happen at this time. M/D has taken very extreme measures to undercut the franchise, rewriting their comic book mythology to replace the word mutant with Inhuman, in a major power play against Fox. You are now, officially, just part of the collateral damage in the ongoing corporate battle of egos.

It is very sad that Joel has had to deal with this and suffered terrible losses here with his time, money, and the soul that he put into his great work. However, Joel has brought more attention to himself in the public eye in a positive way and his video about the situation demonstrates a great deal of class and professionalism. It is disappointing that the series will not come to fruition, but we salute and praise Joel Furtado for his hard work and are positive that this will be the last time we see his videos online in a big way.

A Boy and His Blind Box: Marvel Munnyworld Zipper Pulls

P1060471

It’s a big year for Marvel Comics, with Captain America 2, Amazing Spiderman 2, and Guardians of the Galaxy all making waves in the movie world, and an overwhelming avalanche of Marvel Now! debut issues flooding the market. Kidrobot has been riding the wave of Marvel’s popularity for awhile, and we got a hold of one of their many licensed products, but this one is a twist.

The Marvel Munnyworld Zipper Pulls combine your favorite comic characters with Kidrobot’s distinct Munny design, which is normally a build-and-paint figure that customizers flock to. However, in this case we have pre-made zipper pulls that look so cutesy, your brain might explode.

P1060474

There are 10 zipper pulls in total, which feature two bad guys, seven good guys, and one Deadpool, because Deadpool does whatever he wants. The selection is popular core characters, like Venom, Spidey, Captain America, Thor, and the aforementioned Merc with a Mouth.

The box art is simple but incorporates the zipper pull gimmick cleverly into the packaging, with Spiderman descending on the pull like it’s one of his webs. The art clearly shows you what you are getting, in their very Munny way.

P1060479

Each tiny box comes with a silver bag to ensure the secret identity of your blind box figure remains well-kept from the public. It also features the Marvel Munnyworld logo, which is cool but will not matter after you tear into the packaging. Speaking of, SNIKT!

P1060485

I bought three Marvel Munnyworld Zipper pulls, and I ended up with The Incredible Hulk, Wolverine, and Spiderman! Each zipper pull stands about 3/4 of an inch tall, and is essentially identical to each other in terms of sculpting. That is how a Munny figure works, though, as it is all about customizing. What separates them apart is their paint job, which is smooth and clean and makes it easy to identify each person.

These little figures capture the iconic elements of each Marvel character, whether it’s Hulk’s scowl, Wolverine’s mask, or Spidey’s expressive eyes. Simplistic but effective, they may not be super detailed in any way whatsoever, but more is less with these little dudes, and I think they do the job of explaining the character in one glance extremely well. Plus, these are less than an inch tall, and for this scale, the paint job is perfect.

P1060490

Each Marvel Munnyworld Zipper pull costs $3.99, which is a hefty price for a small zipper pull. However, you are paying for the license, solid construction, and a good-looking and well painted little figurine. This is a blind box that I say is worth buying, but with some trepidation. If you plan on actually using this zipper pull, get it – if you plan on collecting it for the sake of collecting, skip it and get their other Marvel Munnyworld items instead.

The Hulk Smashes Through the Ages in His Own Marvel Minimates Box Set

-2

Fans love the Marvel Minimates “”Through the Ages”” box sets because they offer a chance to collect some of the coolest alternate looks for the character featured in each set. But in Diamond Select’s next box set, “Hulk Through the Ages”, you can collect four of the Hulk’s coolest alternate personalities!

From Las Vegas enforcer Joe Fixit to futuristic despot The Maestro, from the peace-seeking Barbarian Hulk to the rage-filled Composite Hulk, the four Minimates in this set represent the Hulk at his best and worst, and thanks to the Hulk’s unique psychiatric problems, each could be called a different character, and not just a costume change. (Although the Maestro does come with an interchangeable cape and helmet, while Joe Fixit has a interchangeable shirt and hair.)
