It’s been over 40 years since there has been an animated Star Trek series on TV, but it looks like that’s about to change. Alex Kurtzman is now on board with CBS to create a new cartoon, but it’s home will not be a CBS network like the other Trek show. Instead, it’s potentially headed for Nickelodeon.
While there are no other details besides the fact that, yes, this is a real thing, this will be a Star Trek show aimed at children more than adults.
The show was first teased by Kurtzman earlier this year when he told the Hollywood Reporter that “there’s other animated things that we’re building that are an entirely different perspective and an entirely different tone [from Lower Decks]. What’s exciting about it is not only looking at each animated series as what’s the different tone, but what’s the different technology we can apply to these things so that visually they’re entirely different?”
Deadline first reported this news, which is very exciting for Trek fans of all ages. The series will be written by Kevin and Dan Hageman, who also wrote for the Lego Movie and the Lego Ninjago movie and cartoon series on Cartoon Network, and Hotel Transylvania. Most recently, they wrote the screenplay for Croods 2 (which will be out in September 2020), and Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming “Scary Stories” movie.
The Star Trek TV universe is growing by leaps and bounds. The new animated series will join Star Trek: Discovery, now in its second season, along with the unnamed Patrick Stewart-centric Picard series; animated series Lower Decks from Mike McMahan (Rick & Morty’s) targeted at mature audiences; and Section 31, which is in development with Michelle Yeoh attached to star as a spinoff from Discovery.
The Hageman-helmed animated Trek series will be the only one not a part of CBS All Access. There are signs pointing to Viacom and CBS merging, so this will certainly help push those plans forward.
No date has been announced yet for this, but perhaps we will hear something in a few months at Star Trek Mission in Vegas.

Rise of the TMNT has become a very controversial thing for fans of the franchise. When the initial designs made the rounds, fans were outraged. Later, when a few snippets of animation appeared, many fans remained outraged.
Now, Nickelodeon has at long last given us a glimmer of hope with this glimpse of the show open. Does it give you any confidence in the series, or are you still among the fans who may riot when the show debuts in the fall?
Nickelodeon today released the first trailer for its all-new animated series, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which follows the band of brothers as they discover new powers and encounter a mystical world they never knew existed beneath the streets of New York City. The 2D-animated series, which blends action and comedy and features a dynamic fresh look, debuts later this year on Nickelodeon.
The series stars the voice talent of Omar Miller (Ballers) as Raphael, Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation) as Leonardo, Josh Brener (Silicon Valley) as Donatello, Brandon Mychal Smith (You’re The Worst) as Michelangelo, Kat Graham (The Vampire Diaries) as April O’Neil and Eric Bauza (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) as Splinter. WWE Superstar John Cena lends his voice as villain, Baron Draxum, an alchemist warrior mutant who seeks to turn all of humanity into mutants.
Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reimagines the iconic series and breathes new life into the classic characters, with jagged-shelled Raphael as a snapping turtle, wielding twin tonfas as his weapons; Leonardo as a red-eared slider, using an ōdachi sword; Donatello as a soft-shell turtle, sporting a tech-bo staff; and Michelangelo as a box turtle, arming himself with a kusari-fundo. Along for the adventure is the Turtles’ most trusted ally, April O’Neil, a street savvy native New Yorker, and Splinter, father figure and sensei to the Turtles.
The Turtles also hold distinct personality traits and skills: Raphael, as the oldest and biggest brother, is the leader full of enthusiasm and bravado; Leonardo, the self-professed coolest brother possesses irreverent charm and a rebel heart; Donatello is a mechanical genius and tech wizard whose ninja skills are second only to his coding; and Michelangelo, the youngest brother, is a skateboarder and artist who is wild and imaginative.
The new 26-episode series is co-executive produced by Andy Suriano (character designer, Samurai Jack) and Ant Ward (supervising producer, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) at Nickelodeon in Burbank, Calif. Veteran animation industry voice actor Rob Paulsen is voice directing the series.

Cena will portray the Turtles’ newest nemesis, alongside Omar Miller (Ballers) as Raphael, Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation) as Leonardo, Josh Brener (Silicon Valley) as Donatello, Brandon Mychal Smith (You’re The Worst) as Michelangelo, Kat Graham (The Vampire Diaries) as April O’Neil and Eric Bauza (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) as Splinter. Cena unveiled the artwork at Nickelodeon’s Upfront presentation, held today in New York City.
“I’ve always been a fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, so getting the opportunity to voice a character, especially the villain Baron Draxum, is truly special,” said Cena.
An alchemist warrior mutant from the Hidden City, Baron Draxum is the self-proclaimed protector of all mutant-kind. Using ooze, he plans to mutate all of humanity with his insect-like creatures called Oozesquitoes. Cena’s recurring character will debut in the premiere episode of Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, bowing later this year on Nickelodeon.

Funko has a gargantuan booth every year at Toy Fair, and this year was even bigger than before! Here is everything we saw in their booth during NY Toy Fair 2018.
Funko was in full force at NY Toy Fair 2018, and brought many new products for the hit Netflix series “Stranger Things” along with a multitude of more horror movies. Included here are action figures, mystery minis, funko pops, bobbleheads, and a new line of classic Mattel He-Man style action figures with some familiar slashers of the 80’s.
Check out the new sports pops from Funko, including items with current roster and legendary players. Featured here are funko pops from the NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB, and WWE.
Funko’s enormous booth also had a ton of movie licenses for their Funko Pop figures and mystery minis. Funko’s massive colossal booth included funko pops, mystery minis and bobbleheads from loads of TV show licenses, including Riverdale, Gossip Girl, Golden Girls, Bob Ross, Pee Wee’s Playhouse, Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood, Game of Thrones, SMallville, Mystery Science Theater 3000, The Tick, The Walking Dead, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Funko fanatics love Funko pops based on characters from modern and nostalgic cartoons. At NY Toy Fair 2018, the company showed off many new Pops of beloved licenses, including Nickelodeon, He-Man, Thundercats, The Jetsons, Care Bears, Rick and Morty, and Disney properties like Frozen, Winnie The Pooh, Aladdin, The Emperor’s New Groove, and Moana.
Funko Pops look especially great when they capture video game licenses, and NY Toy Fair 2018 debuted a massive amount of new products from these properties.

TLS pays homage to the collector base by offering branded scarcity items and “Easter eggs.” Club 28™ is a very limited edition of 28 figures included in an AV line! Aftermarket values on a single Club 28 figure can swell into thousands of dollars. These scarce products are stamped with a “28” to commemorate the edition. Additionally, in its retailer-exclusive editions of each AV line, the company produces a single Gold figure stamped with the retailer name (i.e. Walmart’s Gold figure has a “WM” stamp, Hot Topic “HT”, Toys”R”Us “TRU”, Target “TG”). These figures are a collector’s “Holy Grail,” with some Gold figures trading between collectors for upwards of $5,000.

Nickelodeon treats viewers to a spooky stop-motion special with the premiere of SpongeBob SquarePants: The Legend of Boo-Kini Bottom, on Friday, Oct. 13, at 7p.m. (ET/PT). The Legend of Boo-Kini Bottom tells the story of the Flying Dutchman (Brian Doyle-Murray) coming to Bikini Bottom to make sure everyone in town is scared–especially SpongeBob, who seems to be unflappable in his belief that spooky things are actually funny.
Inspired by the visual style of classic stop-motion animation TV specials, Bikini Bottom is decked out for Halloween and features Sandy’s treedome as a mad scientist’s lab, including a giant remotely operated Acorn Monster; Mr. Krabs’ restaurant as “The Horrors of the Chum Bucket,” displaying scenes of Plankton torturing food; and Plankton’s restaurant as “The Horrors of the Krusty Krab,” telling the story of Mr. Krabs turning customers into Krabby Patties and more.
The characters wear Halloween costumes, with SpongeBob as a flower, Patrick as a knight, Sandy as a mad scientist, Mr. Krabs as a dollar bill, Plankton as a devil, Squidward as himself, and Karen as a cat. SpongeBob SquarePants: The Legend of Boo-Kini Bottom features an original song, “The Scare Song,” written by Mr. Lawrence, music by Eban Schletter and performed by the Flying Dutchman’s crew of pirate ghosts.
The Legend of Boo-Kini Bottom was produced at Screen Novelties, a Los Angeles-based stop-motion animation production company, where miniature puppets and sets brought Bikini Bottom to life in three dimensions. The production featured 27 unique sets, across five stages, where 15 boxes of breakfast cereal were used to create texture on Bikini Bottom’s coral reefs; eight pounds of glitter were used to decorate SpongeBob’s Halloween pineapple house; hundreds of popsicle sticks created the planks of the rollercoaster track that Patrick and SpongeBob ride; and “black lights” were used to create a fluorescent glow across the puppets and sets.
The special features various production techniques including: stop-motion puppet animation, marionette puppeteering, hand puppets and 2D hand-drawn animation designed by Sally Cruikshank.
Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller are co-executive producers on SpongeBob SquarePants. The special was written by Mr. Lawrence, with Brian Morante serving as the storyboard director and Jennie Monica as producer. The special is being directed by Mark Caballero and Seamus Walsh, and produced by Chris Finnegan of Screen Novelties.
This is the second time Nickelodeon has partnered with Screen Novelties on a SpongeBob SquarePants stop-motion episode. SpongeBob SquarePants: It’s a SpongeBob Christmas! debuted December 2012 and featured Plankton turning everybody in Bikini Bottom from nice to naughty.

SpongeBob SquarePants is executive produced by creator Stephen Hillenburg, who previously worked as a writer, director and creative director on Nickelodeon’s animated series Rocko’s Modern Life. Hillenburg graduated from the California Institute of the Arts with a master’s degree in experimental animation and his undergraduate degree, from Humboldt State University, was in natural science with an emphasis in marine biology. Hillenburg executive produced his first feature film, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, which debuted Nov. 19, 2004 and his second theatrical, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, hit theaters Feb. 6, 2015. The series is produced at Nickelodeon in Burbank.
