New York Toy Fair 2013: “Kotobukiya” unveils new Iron Man, Yu Yu Hakusho, Evangelion and Bishoujo statues

Coming all the way from Japan, “Kotobukiya” always brings great stuff with them making their world debut, or in some cases their North American debut, and NY Toy Fair 2013 was no exception.

Making it’s world debut was a new Star Wars statue, featuring General Grievous from the prequels in all his raging glory. Also unveiled from Star Wars was an unmasked Darth Vader leading a pack of Stormtroopers, as well as a Jango Fett and Boba Fett.

New Marvel Comics statues included Daredevil, Cyclops, Venom, a Todd McFarlane-esque Spiderman, and new statues from “Iron Man 3”. Fans can expect to see the new War Machine and Iron Patriot getting a treatment from Koto as well later this year.

Tons of new ice cube trays made their US debut at the show, including ones from Evangelion featuring the Angels, Naruto and One Piece trays with the main characters, and a new Boba Fett tray from Star Wars. Also being debuted were large-scale ice cubes with one enormous Han Solo in carbonite, as well as a huge Death Star.

Fans of Trigun can look forward to a new statue of Wolfwood along with Vash, who will have a black trenchcoat variant released this year. New statues from the third Evangelion movie will also join them this year, including the fine ladies of Eva as well as Kaworu. Yu Yu Hakusho will be getting statues along with Yugi-Oh, including the world debut of the Dark Magician Girl.

The Bishoujo line continues with the Kitty Pryde statue making her proto debut at the show. Pictured but not sculpted yet was DC Comics Black Canary, which should look great once it is done. Video game fans can also look forward to seeing characters from Mass Effect getting the bishoujo treatment!

New York Toy Fair 2013: New flash drive Mimobots from “Mimoco”

Also brought out were a smaller keychain sized mimobot mini, with Star Wars and DC Comics characters on display for those.

Speaking of DC, Mimoco had many varieties of DC Comics characters on display, either retro or modern style. Also at Toy Fair were mimobots from Adventure Time, GI Joe, Transformers, Hello Kitty, Star Trek (both the original and TNG), Star Wars, a line of Presidential drives, and a few Bruce Lee ones.

New York Toy Fair 2013: “Planet Obo” Booth

Something new and unusual out of NY Toy Fair this year was “Planet Obo”, an environmentally friendly papercraft style toy that is fun to put together, play with, and easy on the wallet.

The story behind this toy line made by a pair of brothers in NYC is that Planet Obo is an unusual cube shaped planet in a distant galaxy, with each side of the planet being different from the others. For example, Desert Side is hot and covered with sand, snow Side is cold and covered with snow, etc. There are also ocean, tropical, forest and mountain side, and each of these six varied sides have their own set of unique body parts that allowed them to adapt to their habitats. With these toys, you can mix and match their parts to create your own new creatures and start your own stories!

While at first glance, they may appear to be blind box figures, but when you buy a case you actually see exactly what you get when you pick one up, since the box is the figure! All you need to do is open the bottom, flip the packaging inside out, put the bottom back on, and voila! All of the parts for the figure are inside the body, which spill out once you open them. The slots are easy to fit with each leg, arm, tentacle, or whatever, and stay firm inside those slots too. Considering how many hands were playing with these at NY Toy Fair this year (and I saw these guys on day four), the joints were very firm, a good sign for this figure.

Each figure costs $5, and this year there are plans for some new planets, as well as re-designs of the pre-existing ones. Made by “Really Brothers”, these figures were produced using kickstarter, with a goal of $6,500 that ended when they gained nearly $24,000 in fan support for their clever and cute concept. Check out the gallery below to see more of Planet Obo!

New York Toy Fair 2013: “Bif Bang Pow” Booth

“Bif Bang Pow” was at NY Toy Fair 2013 with tons of new figures in their classic vintage style!

New items from BBP included new bobbleheads for Dexter, The Venture Bros, Doctor Who, Twilight Zone, and other shows. There were also brand new figures revealed of The Venture Bros in the classic Mego style and in a smaller 3 3/4 inch scale, and new Mego style figures of characters from Battlestar Galactica, Doctor Who, The Twilight Zone, and The Big Bang Theory. One of the coolest items unveiled was a TARDIS playset for the Mego style figures, that opens up to become bigger on the inside just like on the show.

One of the coolest things out was a series of bobbleheads from Star Trek: The Next Generation, which will include a special program to build your bridge from the deck of the Enterprise! No actual protos were available yet, but the photo above lets you know who will be in the first year of this line.

A new big property for BBP is their Six Million Dollar Man line, which includes Steve Austin and even Bigfoot! Plenty of novelty items were available too, including TARDIS mugs, electronic statues from the Twilight Zone, and plenty of other goodies.

New York Toy Fair 2013: “The Presidential” Board Game makes the Electoral College fun

Whoever said politics is not a game was wrong, as “The Presidential” is a new board game that showed itself off to the public at NY Toy Fair 2013.

Players get to choose their side, being either a republican or a democrat, with the goal of “The Presidential” being to win 270 electoral votes. You can gain or lose popularity through the playing cards in the game, which have plenty of humorous anecdotes that add a wonderful sense of randomness like the real world of politics. You can even write your own cards to spice things up!

The game also has a digital element, that allows you to keep track of votes on a digital scoreboard that you can install on a computer. There is no age limit for the game, and I was told that even elementary school kids enjoy playing it, even if they do not fully understand the political side of it. For middle school kids and up, adults included, this game seems like a fun way to learn about how the US Government works. Stay tuned in the near future when we try this game out and see if it really is any good!

New York Toy Fair 2013: “Monster Factory” Booth

Started in 2003 by three friends from Toronto, Canada, “Monster Factory” line of plushies that started out as a simple fun project for the trio, and turned into a huge business.

Since their creation, the little monsters have appeared in “Rolling Stone” and “People” magazine, and have made appearance on TV’s “Ugly Betty” and “Ramona and Beezus”. Bliss Man, one of the original founders, was at NY Toy Fair 2013 with her line of cuddly little monsters that fit in the palm of your hands.

Each of the dozen characters have their own unique back story to fit the personality of anyone. The monsters include Booh, Todd, Doyle, Jack, Victor, Pax, Clementine, Colin, Irene, Lois, Kyle, and Bliss’ personal favorite seen above with her, Buddy. These cuties were one of my favorite plushies this year, and are just one part of a very large plush empire that Monster Factory is involved in.
