Todd McFarlane Explains How He Created “Venom” Because He hated The Black Suit

Sometimes, necessity is the mother of invention. Case in point, famous comic artist turned toy guru (and the person still drawing Spawn every month) Todd McFarlane just told the secret origin of Venom. Turns out, the reason is a little less dramatic than we thought.

Check out the Instagram video below, with a transcript following that:

A post shared by Todd McFarlane (@toddmcfarlane) on Mar 10, 2019 at 4:36pm PDT

“I came into the Spider-Man office after doing the Hulk and they wanted me to do Spider-Man, but he was in this black costume. I didn’t wanna draw this black costume. It meant nothing to me. I wanted to draw the red and blue… So, they said, ‘Todd, if you just come on at #298 we promise that maybe we can get rid of it.’ And I go, ‘Well let’s just get rid of it fast!”

“So, I did a character… I ripped the costume off him… I did this character called Venom, handed it to David Michelinie, the writer, and they said, ‘Just hold on, hold on, hold on,'” he continued. “So, then, all of a sudden I do #298, he’s still in the black, #299, he’s still in the black, finally #300, look I even said here on the cover sketch, ‘Can we do one in the black and the red? Come on, I want to do the black and the red.’ And they said, “Yeah, yeah, yeah, fine.'”

“So, essentially, #300 is the origin of Venom,” said McFarlane. “But to me, it’s ‘How the hell do we get this goddamn black costume off Peter Parker?’ issue.”

Amazing Spider-Man #300 is when Peter Parker gets rid of the symbiote black suit costume, which somehow finds its way to Eddie Brock who soon becomes Venom.

While Todd certainly wanted to make a badass character, it seems he also just wanted to draw something different. Venom turned out to be the way for him to make those wishes come true, while also creating an iconic villain turned anti-hero that Marvel readers would come to love for many decades.

Todd McFarlane Gives Details About New DC Comics Action Figures – Toy Fair 2019

McFarlane Toys has had a busy week ahead of Toy Fair 2019. With the announcement that they picked up the Harry Potter license, and today’s first reveal of their Game of Thrones figures, things have been crazy for fans. However, the biggest piece of news was that the company grabbed the DC Comics license. For the first time since this story broke, we have some important updates on what that line will look like.

The Toddfather spoke with SyFy for this exclusive interview, where he gave us our first bits of information about this new toy line.

“We’ll go about it the same way anyone would, really,” Todd explained. “If I handed you the license, who would you choose? Hopefully, there would be an 80 percent overlap in the characters I would choose and you would choose, then we’d pick those five to 10 characters to do for sure”.

“We’ll mix in some new characters that have grown in stature, say, for instance, Aquaman with his hit movie, and take a look with what’s happening in pop culture and the publishing end of things as well.”

He continued, “I think down the line is where the fun beings. Maybe sometime later we do a McFarlane Batman. I don’t know if it’s been attempted but I’m the only one who knows that those capes are supposed to be doing.”

McFarlane also told SyFy that DC and Warner Bros have given him the green light to flex his own creative muscles on the characters, just nothing too dramatic:

“We’re not talking major redesigns, just a bit of a tweak here and there,” he says. “So far, they’ve been flexible, saying it seems fun and that we’ll talk about it.”

We also learned from this article that the scale will be 6″ to 12″, and they could be based on any aspect of the DC multiverse, including video games. With the recent reveal that they also picked up the Mortal Kombat license, could we perhaps get some crossover toys?

There have been a lot of reveals leading up to NY Toy Fair. Some of the highlights so far have included Hasbro teasing us with a first glimpse of their new Overwatch figuresDiamond Select purchasing Gentle GiantHasbro’s “Star Wars: Galaxy of Adventures” figures,  Mezco’s new One:12 Captain Marvel figureMego announced new 14″ Star Trek figures, and a new line based on characters from Stan Lee’s vault, and Neca debuted a great looking Shredder and Karate Kid set.

McFarlane Toys and DC Team Up to Create Collector Figures Starting in 2020

It’s been a very busy news week for toys, and just when I think it will calm down for a few hours, the hits just keep on coming. Earlier today, McFarlane Toys revealed another new license they are adding under their rapidly expanding umbrella – DC Comics.

Whoever would have said to me that Todd McFarlane, father of Spawn and head honcho at Image Comics, would be making DC comics action figures would be ridiculed on sight. Yet, here we are today, and I think the temperature in Hell may have just became a bit chilly.

Here is the info from the official press release:

Batman, Superman and the entire roster of DC’s iconic characters have a new place to hang up their capes and cowls. McFarlane Toys, an award-winning toy company, announced today they have entered into a three-year global licensing agreement with Warner Bros. Consumer Products, on behalf of DC, to release DC Multiverse collector figures in both mass and specialty retail spaces. Beginning early 2020, McFarlane Toys will bring dozens of the iconic DC comic books, video games and feature films’ near-endless stable of characters to life with 6” – 12” ultra-posable action figures, corresponding accessories and vehicles branded DC Multiverse.

“This partnership with Warner Bros. Consumer Products and DC will be great fun for my company, and a chance to deliver products that millions of fans of the DC brand have been asking for,” said Todd McFarlane, Owner and CEO of McFarlane Toys. “The DC universe has captivated the world and to be able to play in that ‘sandbox’ now makes me feel like a kid all over again. I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish together.”

The DC Multiverse collector figures and related toys will be available at major retail locations beginning in 2020.

It was announced earlier this year that DC would be ending their partnership with Mattel, who has been producing their toys for years. As of now, Spinmasters has also picked up the figure license along with McFarlane, and we will have to wait until Toy Fair next year to see what both of them do with it.

This new is hot off the heels of McFarlane Toys announcing they will be doing the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, as well as My Hero Academia.

NY Toy Fair 2016: McFarlane Toys video tour – The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Spawn

NY Toy Fair is almost at a close, and our massive video coverage continues as we look at the latest toys, statues, and construction sets from an original trendsetter in the high-end action figure world, McFarlane Toys!

The Toddfather himself, Todd McFarlane, gave us a walking tour of the booth. We get a glimpse at their new figures from Assassin’s Creed, The Walking Dead, NBA and NFL, and HALO line. Unfortunately, due to an issue with my microphone (AKA it’s eventual death during this event), a good portion of the interview was lost due to that snafu. This was the only section I was able to recover, so please excuse the occasional audio issue in this video.

With so many items from The Walking Dead, we had to give it a video all to itself. This highlight reel checks out their upcoming figures, statues and construction sets from the hit show on AMC, along with a new item from Fear the Walking Dead. Best of all, the Negan statue gets a spotlight and we get up close and personal with the Daryl Dixon statue, which is so new that it is not even painted yet and still has a long way to go before being finalized, according to Todd himself. Daryl has never looked better, and this is going to be tough to pass up for any serious TWD collector.

In this video, we get an overview of some of the awesome stuff in the public booth like their Game of Thrones construction sets as well as the latest Spawn statues, plus some secrets that were only accessible in the press area like their newest Game of Thrones and Five Nights at Freddy’s construction sets, their new anime line, and some additional Walking Dead products, including collectible mini-figures.

McFarlane Toys Announces “Collector’s Club Resin Program”

McFarlane Toys announced during Todd McFarlane’s panel at New York Comic-Con 2011 that the company is launching the new “Collector’s Club Resin Program”.

In a similar vein as the various collector’s club like Matty Collector or Hasbro’s GI Joe Club, this new program will bring fans arguably some of McFarlane’s coolest statues ever and feature franchise properties with worldwide name recognition including Spawn, Haunt and The Walking Dead comics, along with star players from the NFL, MLB, NHL and NBA. The program will kick off with a “Spawn: The Beginning” statue (either signed or unsigned) during the holidays, followed by a “Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning” Prismere Troll and Haunt statue in spring 2012.

No prices were officially announced for this program, nor official dates of release for any of the statues other than the vague timeline of “the holidays”, but most likely that should mean this November’s “Black Friday”. Log on to the Spawn store for details and info for purchasing these once they become available.
