Ghostbusters/ Transformers Crossover Toy Revealed, Ectotron! – Toy Fair 2019

We have been posting up a storm this week about all of the amazing reveals ahead of NY Toy Fair 2019, but I think Hasbro just won the event. In an unbelievable crossover of epic proportions, bigger than the Tunguska explosion of 1908, Hasbro has revealed a mash-up toy combining Transformers with… Ghostbusters!

Revealed by io9 earlier this morning, Named “Ectotron”, this Transformer comes equipped with his own proton pack and paranormal activity-detecting goggles. He also has a makeshift jumpsuit color scheme once transformed.

According to the original article, Ectotron transforms from a seven-inch long replica of the Ghostbusters Ecto-1 vehicle to a robot in about 22 steps.

As if getting a new movie wasn’t enough, now we get a transformer too!

A non-transforming Slimer figure is also included, although the scale of this is not known at this time.

Ectotron will also get his own official origin story from IDW Publishing. A brand new 5-part comic series from creative team Erik Burnham & Dan Schoening, the team responsible for the great GB comics out now from IDW, will begin in June 2019.

I was not expecting to make an announcement like this on my site today, but wow! I’m not a big Transformers fan, but this is an instant purchase for me.

This is not the first crossover toy for Ghostbusters, as Playmates previously did a mash-up combining the busters with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

This toy will be available in early June for $40 piece and will be exclusively available in-store at GameStop, although the original article also says you can get it online. Pre-orders will start tomorrow at GameStop’s siteHasbroPulse.com, and EB Games Canada.

This year marks the 35th anniversary of both the TRANSFORMERS brand & the original Ghostbusters film.

There have been a lot of reveals leading up to NY Toy Fair. Some of the highlights so far have included Hasbro teasing us with a first glimpse of their new Overwatch figuresDiamond Select purchasing Gentle GiantMcFarlane Toys picking up the DC Comics LicenseHasbro’s “Star Wars: Galaxy of Adventures” figures,  Mezco’s new One:12 Captain Marvel figureMego announced new 14″ Star Trek figures, and a new line based on characters from Stan Lee’s vault, and Neca debuted a great looking Shredder and Karate Kid set.

Paramount Continues Partnership With Hasbro To Make More Transformers Movies

Good news, Transformers fans! More movies are on the way, and if they are all half as good as Bumblebee, then things could be looking up for the franchise.

During the Hasbro 4th Quarter Earnings Conference call, CEO of Hasbro Brian Goldner spoke about the current state of the Transformers brand. Goldner went on to speak specifically about the future plans for the movies, and it turns out they do have some:

“In Transformers, in the fourth quarter was up both in the US and internationally, so up overall. We really successfully reengaged fans and families with Bumblebee. It’s done over $450 million globally.

The early indications as we enter the New Year are for a strong ESP and home entertainment window, and we believe that the enterprise for Bumblebee, including the film, is profitable for Hasbro go forward.

Obviously we’re in the early days. Haven’t hit the home entertainment window yet. We haven’t even opened in Japan yet, and the movie is still in theaters.

We knew In addition to the feature film, which is an important element and we are working on new films ideas with Paramount in partnership with Jim Giannopoulos and that team, and they’re fantastic, we also have television on Cartoon Network, Netflix offering, and preschool offering. So across the board, it’s a brand that really embodies our brand blueprint strategy, and we continue to believe very strongly in the power of the franchise.”

Hasbro will webcast its Annual Investor Update at New York Toy Fair 2019 on Friday, February 15, 2019 at 8:00 AM EST at this link here. The meeting will be hosted by Mr. Goldner, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Deborah Thomas, Chief Financial Officer, and John Frascotti, President and Chief Operating Officer. Replays of the call and the Investor Day will be available at the same location approximately 2 hours following completion of each event.

There was no mention of a direct sequel to Bumblebee, which has been having a very successful box-office run, but it would not be surprising to see that series continue on. Perhaps we will get more Cyberton-based movie as time goes on. What kind of Transformers movie do you want to see them make next?

Hasbro announces anthology for Women’s History Month, “Synergy”

In recognition of Women’s History Month, IDW Publishing and Hasbro Inc. (NASDAQ: HAS) have teamed up to create Synergy: A Hasbro Creators Showcase, a 48-page celebration anthology of fan-favorite creators and new talent working with many of the most beloved Hasbro characters.

The Synergy anthology features five brand-new stories: autobiographical works written by Mairghread Scott (drawn by Sara Pitre-Durocher, reuniting the creative team behind the Transformers: Till All Are One series) and Katie Cook (of the hit My Little Pony comic), plus original tales inspired by G.I. Joe, Transformers, and Jem and the Holograms.

Mairghread Scott says, “Transformers is a brand that shaped both my childhood and adult life. I’m grateful for the chance to talk about what these amazing robots have meant to me, and others, over the years.”

Katie Cook says, “Hasbro was such an integral part of my upbringing. My Little Pony inspired a youth full of pastel imaginings and became a huge part of my cartooning career as I got the chance to make those imaginings real. I bonded with childhood friends over ponies in the 1980s, and as an adult, I crafted stories for My Little Pony alongside creators who have become the friends of a lifetime.”

In addition to storytelling, Synergy: A Hasbro Creators Showcase includes four new pin-ups, as well as a gallery of thirteen fabulous images from the IDW archives – dynamic illustrations that celebrate the women who have already made, or will soon make, an impact on the world of Hasbro for many years to come.

Synergy editor Megan Brown says, “This is a great coming together of creative talent and an amazing showcase for a host of wonderful authors, artists, and colorists — both old and new. I am beyond thrilled to be editing this compilation, and to be given the chance to highlight the amazing work of women in the comics industry.”

IDW Relaunches Transformers Comics

IDW Publishing proudly announces that a brand-new Transformers series will debut in March 2019 that will explore the very moment when a glorious, peaceful Cybertron begins its downward spiral into chaos.

Available twice monthly, IDW’s Transformers comic will be written by Brian Ruckley, author of the Godless World fantasy trilogy, and illustrated by Angel Hernandez (Star Trek: Discovery – Succession) and Ron Joseph (Micronauts: Wrath of Karza).

In this new Transformers comic, IDW will explore Cybertron in ways never seen by audiences before – delving into an idyllic society, peaceful for thousands of years, as it faces the most momentous event in its history: the mysterious end of a single life. Through the eyes of young Bumblebee and his friends, fans will witness conspiracies forming, harmony giving way to conflict, and the very fabric of Cybertronian civilization tearing itself apart.

“Bringing Transformers fans this story is a real privilege,” says Brian Ruckley. “But just as important, it’s an amazing opportunity for new readers to discover and explore one of the biggest universes – and one of the best casts of characters – that science fiction has to offer, and to get in right at the start of a truly epic saga.”

Ron Joseph says, “In my youth, I devoured everything Transformers – toys, comics, the cartoon, the movie – with a Unicron-like hunger. ‘Robots in Disguise’ dominated my every waking moment. To join IDW’s creative team for the launch of a Transformers comic is staggering, and easily one of the greatest moments of my life.”

“We are eager to begin this new chapter in Transformers storytelling,” says Michael Kelly, Hasbro’s Vice President of Global Publishing. “We are excited to begin a tale that will be accessible and appealing to readers unfamiliar with Transformers lore, while still providing the depth and drama that our long-time fans expect. It’s a big responsibility, but we’ve got the right team and the right characters to do it.”

The debut issue of this new Transformers comic will be available with multiple cover variants, by artists Gabriel Rodriguez, Angel Hernandez, Casey W. Coller, and Freddie E. Williams II. Issue #2, also available in March, will feature covers by Nelson Daniel, Ron Joseph, and Jeffrey Veregge.
