J.K. Rowling regrets a certain relationship in the “Harry Potter” world
British newspaper, The Sunday Times, posted a sneak peek at an upcoming headline on Twitter, which has a quote that has rocked the Harry Potter fanbase to its core.
It turns out that Mr. Potter may have ended up with the wrong lady, and (spoiler alert) instead of being with Ginny Weasley, he should have been with Hermione Granger. Instead, Hermione shacked up with Ron Weasley, and Rowling admitted it may have been for all the wrong reasons.
“I wrote the Hermione/Ron relationship as a form of wish fulfillment,” author J.K. Rowling was quoted as saying. “That’s how it was conceived, really. For reasons that have very little to do with literature and far more to do with me clinging to the plot as I first imagined it, Hermione ended up with Ron.”
“I know, I’m sorry,” she lamented, “I can hear the rage and fury it might cause some fans, but if I’m absolutely honest, distance has given me perspective on that. It was a choice I made for very personal reasons, not for reasons of credibility. Am I breaking people’s hearts by saying this? I hope not.” Rowling also believed that Ron and Hermione would have needed “relationship counseling” in the future, so here is hoping her upcoming sequels touch on that hot topic (although we do know that the duo has two children, so at least one part of their relationship works well).
Emma Watson, who portrayed Hermione in the movies and has been a special guest editor for The Sunday Times this month, didn’t seem shocked by these comments and agreed with her. “I think there are fans out there who know that too and who wonder whether Ron would have really been able to make her happy.”
To be fair, plenty of fans have probably already believe that to begin with and wished it were true. Now they can rest easy, knowing that even if it did not turn out that way in the series, it was the original plan. Then again, there also fans who probably still want Harry to marry Cho Chang, but that would never have worked out. As for me, I always thought Luna Lovegood and Harry should have coupled up, but I think I am the minority in that one (I dig weird chicks).
