Simpsons Cast Member: “Fox Would Rather Cancel The Show Than Let Disney Mess With ‘The Simpsons'”
The news that Disney acquired Fox will easily be one of the biggest business stories not only of the year, but possibly of the decade. It’s an acquisition that will have ramifications for years to come, with the life of many franchises up in the air. One of the properties many fans are concerned about it “The Simpsons”, a staple from Fox that is older than most other shows on TV. With so many franchises in jeopardy, one cast member believes that Fox would rather kill the series than see it be messed with by Disney.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Yeardley Smith (voice of Lisa Simpson) said, “When you’re dealing with something that is still so culturally relevant, and sort of such a pillar of our culture.”
“If you’re going to mess with that, that’s some pretty risky territory.
“So my feeling is — and I could be completely wrong — is that they would cancel it before they would change it [creatively].”
With the purchase still so fresh, no one really knows if the company plans on screwing with any of their new franchises, nor do we know if those changes could have a positive or negative impact on them. The litmus test may be what happens to the X-Men and Fantastic Four, but it seems there is no plan yet for either to integrate into the current MCU.
Disney has yet to announce its plans for the show, which first aired in December 1989. Before the merger happened, “The Simpsons” had been renewed for another two years.
